Mais Arepas – 1200 Carondelet
Just a block from the St. Charles street car line, in Central City, you can find a truly authentic Columbian experience in the heart of New Orleans. Once a hidden gem, Mais Arepas is now packing it out Tuesday through Sunday night.
When you enter this popular South American café, your ears are filled with the sounds of bar tenders shaking up Caipirinhas (the restaurant’s signature cocktail), Latin music and laughter. The aromas of lime, grilled meats and toasted corn bread waft through the air. This swank restaurant is beautifully designed, with wall coverings and light fixtures that make you question whether you are in New Orleans or South Beach.
Make a reservation in advance if you want a table or walk in and eat at the bar to catch up with the friendly bar staff.
The main staple on the menu is the Arepa, defined as a corn pancake, featured in Venezuelan and Columbian cuisine. Mais Arepas features around 13 different arepas on the menu, stuffed with items like skirt steak, chorizo or chicken, and garnished with plantains, cheese and avocado, just to name a few.
Don’t miss this vibrant restaurant just 4 blocks from The Green House Inn.
GHI’s favorites: Strawberry Caipirinha, Ceviche de Camaron, Empanadas Calenas and the Arepa Carnicera (with grilled skirt steak, avocado and cranberry beans).
